Republicans Face Uphill Battle for Governor’s Mansion

Whoever emerges from the May primary as the GOP nominee is likely be an underdog against either Democratic candidate, Lt. Gov. Beverly Perdue or State Treasurer Richard Moore. Democrats will have held the Executive Mansion for 16 years when Easley leaves office in 2009, and only two Republicans have been elected governor in the past century.
I think this article gives a fairly accurate portrayal of the ‘08 race. Mike Easley has been an okay governor. He hasn’t been outstanding, but he hasn’t been horrible. Spending has increased far too much during his tenure, however the state has also become one big boom town over the last several years with thousands of new residents and companies making North Carolina their home. The race is certainly the Democrats to lose.
