SUMMERVILLE — Mike Rose announced Thursday his candidacy for state Senate District 38.
Rose, who served in the Senate from 1988 to 1997, said local leaders concerned about growth urged him to run for the seat that includes parts of Dorchester and Charleston counties.
“Growth is becoming a real issue in our community while state spending continues out of control,” he said in a press release. “As senator, I was recognized for my votes to limit government spending and taxes, and for tougher ethics laws. I’ve also been known for tackling the tough issues and getting things done. And that’s what we need now, particularly on the growth issues facing our community.”

Foxx, R-5th, announced last year that she will not make any requests for so-called earmarks until she believes that the system for distributing money in Congress becomes more fair and transparent.
That means no requests for any of the projects in the city’s $12.5 million legislative package.
Foxx told council members that she would, however, write letters of support for federal grant applications that the city submits. She also told the council to look for ways it can cut costs.
“The system for earmarks is broken, and something has to be done to fix it,” she said. “Many earmarks are legitimate and well spent, but some were not.”

I hope Foxx stands firm on this. I don’t have an issue so much with the police technology request, but everything else falls squarely on the shoulders of the city. Let them pay for their own road improvements. That’s what we are doing here in York County with the Pennies for Progress. Nobody went and begged Congressman Spratt to get Washington to pay for our roads. I’m also pleased to hear her tell them to cut their own expenses elsewhere first. Why should others foot their bill? Local governments can be like crack addicts when it comes to Federal dollars. Give them a little taste now and they’ll be back asking for even more.

The petition seeks Hewett’s suspension on the grounds of willful or habitual neglect or refusal to perform duties of his office, willful misconduct or maladministration in office, extortion, intoxication or upon conviction of being intoxicated, Gore said.
Among the allegations in the petition is that Hewett has been intoxicated at crime scenes; intimidated his employees; required employees to perform campaign duties, such as painting campaign signs, while working on county time and while off duty; and ordered employees to work at his residence.
Recordings and photos from more than 20 former or current sheriff’s office employees support the affidavits in the petition.

Now there’s a sheriff to be proud of. This guy sounds like a regular Vic Mackey.
