The Sandcastle Police Might Be Coming to a Beach Near You

Published by Sam at 3:14 pm under Low Country, Nanny State Alert, South Carolina

ISLE OF PALMS — Building in the sand is free, but beach lovers who leave their castles behind could soon pay the price.

Under a new proposal, beachcombers could get a $128 to $500 ticket for not flattening sand castles and not filling in holes when they’re through. City leaders intend to discuss the proposal more in the next month.

Isle of Palms City Councilman Ryan Buckhannon, who sits on the public safety committee that formulated the law’s first draft, said the provision is part of a bigger proposal aimed at stopping droves of tourists from leaving items and large holes behind.

“It’s a disposable world now,” he said.

Tourists often abandon their tents, coolers and surfboards for others to enjoy. The proposed law would require people to pick up after themselves and knock over sand castles before leaving the area.

Buckhannon said the holes are the real problem. A police officer recently fell into a hole and twisted an ankle. Councilman Michael Loftus said he knows of others who have done the same while walking the beach at night.

The Post and Courier

Somewhere a village is missing its idiot.  That dim witted boob would be Ryan Buckhannon and Isle of Palms anointed him City Councilman. There is always some twit in government who thinks its their responsibility to pass a law to solve every single teeny tiny issue that pops up.

I can perfectly understand having policies enforced to keep people from leaving stuff on the beach and trashing it up. That’s absolutely acceptable, but sandcastles? His proposal is so idiotic someone should have just slapped some sense back into him, assuming there was any there to begin with, when he brought the inane proposal forward. The clear irrationality of how this would even be enforced should shame the man with gargantuan embarrassment. Will the Isle of Palms pay police officers to stand on the beach all day monitoring the building and demolition of every six year old child’s sandcastle? If they have the time to do that then they have too many law officers on the force.

If I had read this without knowing what paper it came from, I would have assumed that this was a parody from The Onion.

It must be nice to hide behind an alias to ridicule or condemn the actions of others with out the balls to leave the name of the author. I guess the idea of taking a story of have truths and lies as fact shows your stupidity and that you as well as most people are sheep and will just follow what is told to them without having the ability or knowledge of how to check facts. Well here are some facts #1, I was not the author of this bill, (also, it’s not a bill, you moron, here it’s called an ordinance) it started in a committee that I am not even on. #2 I just happen to run into the reporter who authored the infamous column last week and she asked me my opinion about the so called sandcastle ordinance. My entire quote was “I think its ridiculous, the city is trying to find way to keep the beach free of vacationers debris like tents and chairs not sandcastles. We live in a disposable world, and people think that they can just leave their belonging behind.” So how about next time you run to slander your next victim and hide behind your gutless authoress column, take the time to get the facts prior to you trying to put together another so called column. So, if you need some pointers on how to accurately write an article (because obviously you do) I can put you in touch with my eight year old sons who actually know how to check their facts.

    Ryan,

My family wants to thank you for the years of service you have given us on the Isle of Palms. Your job is a thankless one and you are subjected to lots of unnecessary abuse. We want to let you know we support you and please ignore the idiot reporter as that person is unaware of the countless hours you dedicate to our town which takes you away from your family. To be a community servant is a special calling or gift and to be constantly harassed by uninformed people is a sin. You are doing a fantastic job for every single person who lives and visits the Isle of Palms!

The ordinance was forwarded to the city council by the Public Safety Committee of which you are indeed a member, Ryan. This information comes straight from the Isle of Palms City Web site.

Furthermore, I have been in touch with The Post and Courier reporter who wrote the article. She neither confirmed nor denied that the quotes you provided to her for the article were parsed and taken out of context.

Ummmm, how about just filling up your sandcastle hole before you leave? Its really not that difficult people. I have met Ryan on several occasions and he is a level headed and hard working person that has nothing but the island’s best interest in mind. I hope he can ignore this balogna, its more than likely leftover angst from the last election.

This is unbelievable! I have known Ryan and his family for over 15 years and without a doubt you have made statements that would never come out of his mouth.

If i were the employer of the idiot who wrote this bougus article, that person or persons would be looking for another job.

I guess thats not what sells papers Eh………
