Moore, Perdue Tied, McCrory Leads GOP
The Democratic primary for governor is a dead heat, according to a new poll.A survey by Public Policy Polling showed Lt. Gov. Beverly Perdue with 38 percent of likely voters in the Democratic primary, followed by State Treasurer Richard Moore with 37 percent.Using automated calls March 29 and 30, the Democratic firm surveyed 1,100 likely Democratic primary voters. The margin of sampling error is plus or minus 3 percentage points.
The Dem race is going to be a toss up until the very end.
Charlotte Mayor Pat McCrory is leading the pack pursuing the Republican nomination for governor, according to the latest survey by Public Policy Polling.
PPP, a Democratic firm, surveyed 744 likely Republican primary voters on March 29-30. It found that 35 percent of those surveyed preferred McCrory, while 23 percent favored state Sen. Fred Smith of Clayton. Salisbury lawyer Bill Graham and former state Supreme Court Justice Bob Orr both came in at 7 percent.
I think McCrory will prevail in the primary which will make this a real horse race come November. He polls within the margin of error against both Democratic candidates.
There hasn’t been a lot of scrutiny of McCrory’s record…those numbers are just name recognition. I’d be worried if he were the nominee; but not as worried as I’d be with some of our other choices. Bob Orr, while much…much lower on the name recognition scale actually has a statewide record and a history of winning offices previously unwinnable for Republicans.
Justin, I agree Orr has a good record in past races, but he is polling so low in the primary that I don’t see any possibility of him becoming the nominee.
I think you’re both right. As a new resident of N.C., I’ve been following the gubernatorial race for a few months and find Bob Orr to be far and away the best candidate.
Unfortunately, unless Fred Smith gets hit by a truck and Pat McCrory gets caught robbing a bank, I don’t see Orr winning.
Even if he loses, I hope Orr will stick around state politics. Government needs more people like him.
As an aside, if Orr can’t win, I hope Smith is the nominee. I’ve looked into McCrory’s record as mayor, and while he’s been successful, he’s too reliant on more taxes and higher spending. Charlotte’s spending outlays skyrocketed under his watch, and we don’t need that kind of fiscal irresponsibility in Raleigh.
ahem.. Guiliani was leading the GOP Presidential polls for ages. Where did that get him? Once the voters actually spent the time and got to know where he stood on issues he was dead in the water. The voters of NC haven’t taken the time to find out where these candidates actually stand.
