Student Loan Wage Garnishment Bill Dead

Published by Sam at 8:16 pm under Education, SC House, South Carolina

A bill that would have allowed lenders to garnish the wages of student loan holders has been sent back to committee by the House, meaning it is likely dead for the session.

The bill was sent back to the Judiciary Committee

The State

This was irresponsible for the House not to deal with this issue.  When students don’t pay the loans back it has an adverse effect on the amount of money that is available for future students, not to mention the fact that it can effect tuition rates as well.  I specifically remember when I received a Perkins loan and the financial adviser driving that point across to me to make sure I pay it back on time and not screw the future students.  There is no logical argument to stand behind to oppose appropriate collections on these defaulted loans.

Oh stupid me.At some point in my life, while I was struggling to survive I forgot or did’nt have the funds to keep up with my payments,so wage garnishment became the means to pay it off.Well I’ve been doing this for awhile at 20% of my pay twice monthly.Squeeking by here, but that’s O.K.Then I get a Refund on My taxes,They take that too!It was’nt huge, but they took it.I’m on the verge of being HOMELESS!If this is How WE treat our own.If I just drop out, then who gets anything.I should’nt have to become homeless because I am PAYING through garnishment. We forgive other countries of their debt to us.I’m not asking for that, but leave me some means to survive. If you take every chance to collect then I have no choice.

Ask the government how many payments it’s defaulted on.Demand payment right now! That’s funny.

Spare me the drama, Gary. You took out the loan. You’re responsible to pay it. Nobody told you to take out more than you could afford. Go to a cheaper school.

admin, there is no drama, you seem to have read bits and pieces.Did I not say I am paying. The Federal government states 20% of income a month, not any other form of monies, such as windfall from investments or tax return.Look I have no problem with that, but leave me a leg to stand on.I went through the part where I was hoping they had forgotten about me,when I remembered them it had tripled the amount I owed.Money goes in all kind of directions in the government the student loan program is a valuble program,if the person takeing out the loan is well informed as to the education they wish to pursue, then they should understand that, that education should be able to sustain them to be able to pay their loan, and live a life well within the means of todays standards. Some of the Programs that the Government allows a loan for do not leave people a means to live after their education is complete. The Government does not research the schools it applies loans to,ie. soothsayer U could be an accredited student loan.Bottom Line I’m Paying My Dues,But Let’s Be Fair,I need to Live Too!
