ASHEVILLE – A federal jury convicted the former Buncombe County sheriff and a volunteer aide Thursday of taking payments to protect illegal gambling operations in Western North Carolina.

Former Sheriff Bobby Medford was convicted on 11 charges of using his position to extort money from gambling operators, money laundering and conspiracy to run an illegal gambling business. Medford’s co-defendant, former volunteer Capt. Guy Penland, also was convicted on the charges. A sentencing hearing will be held at a later date.
