North Carolina Runoff Results
The entire state hasn’t officially reported in yet, but the leaders have a large enough margin that it’s basically over. Mary Fant Donnan has won the Labor Commissioner runoff so she will go on to face Republican incumbent Cherie Berry in November. Justin Burr has defeated incumbent State Representative Kenny Furr in House District 67. That is awesome. I like Burr and we need more younger people in Raleigh. Don Davis handily defeated Kathy Taft in the Democratic runoff for Senate District 5.
We need a representative who will work to bring progress to the East. We need an experienced representative who know how to make the needed changes for government.
How can a young person go to Raleigh for $13,956 a year plus the per diem. How can someone young serve? How can some go to Raleigh without being independedly wealthy or retired?
I am interested in your response.
Being a state legislator is not a full time job in the traditional sense. Many legislators in Raleigh are business owners, entrepreneurs, or have careers that allow them the flexibility to meet the demands of being a state legislator while still engaging in their private sector profession. In Burr’s case he is a partial owner of a bail bonds agency and a licensed realtor, so it would appear he does not have the time constraints preventing him from being effective in Raleigh as your typical “nine to fiver” would.
I agree with you on your point, though. Most people who are not independently wealthy or have a standard career would not be able to serve as a state legislator, neither here in North Carolina or most other states.
