Do Pardon Me as I Beat an Almost Dead Equine
A few days ago I posted a story on how the Fairness Doctrine might be applicable to internet blogs. Sam the Admin thought I was possibly being a bit of an alarmist, which is a fair criticism when you consider that I never leave my house without my trusty tinfoil hat and a can of homemade Lib-Repellent.
However, I’d like to point you in the direction of Rasmussen polling’s latest numbers on this topic. Feel free to shudder and cringe along with me…
National Survey of 1,000 Likely Voters
August 13, 2008Should the government require all radio and television stations to offer equal amounts of conservative and liberal political commentary?
Yes 47%
No 39%
Not Sure 14%Should the government require web sites and bloggers that offer political commentary to present opposing viewpoints?
Yes 31%
No 57%
Not Sure 12%
Now, there are two things I’d like to point out. Regarding the first question, I bet that some of the people who said ‘yes’ don’t really think that Rush Limbaugh should be forced to share time with Al Franken. No one should ever wish that on anyone. They’re probably in favor of “fairness” during evening newscasts and for cable news channels and the like. That question could have been a little more specific. Still, 47% does worry me.
The second thing I’d like to point out is that the second question is pretty clear and to the point… and 31% of our fellow Americans, people who probably go to the polls and have an equal vote as you, are fully in favor of government censorship. That freakin’ scares the bejeezus out of me. This isn’t like some 5%-10% fringe showing, folks. Add in that 12% that aren’t sure if they’re living in America or Iran, and 430 out of 1,000 people either support government censorship or are kinda “on the fence” about it. Jeeeez…
No one ever thinks they’re gonna lose their rights until it’s too late. These numbers need to scare every person who values freedom and liberty.
