Berry Taking Heat Over Contributions

Published by Bane Windlow at 9:26 pm under Election 2008, North Carolina

The N.C. Democratic Party has called on state Labor Commissioner Cherie Berry to return campaign contributions from companies she regulates.

“Our workers’ safety should not be compromised by Cherie Berry’s need for campaign cash,” state Democratic Party Chairman Jerry Meek said.

The statement follows a Charlotte Observer story last week that reported that Berry has collected at least half of her contributions from executives and managers of companies her Labor Department has inspected. The story also found that Berry’s contributors got bigger-than-average reductions in fines resulting from workplace safety inspections.

Berry, a Republican running for her third term, has said there is no connection between campaign contributions and decisions made by the Labor Department.

Well gee, it sure looks awfully suspicious there, Cher!  There may be no wrong doing, but when you get half your donations from companies you’re inspecting and many of those same companies just coincidentally happen to get lower fines (wink, wink) than those that don’t it’s sure gonna raise from eyebrows.

You might have a point except for a couple things.
    1) She makes no decisions over the fines and punishments imposed.
    2) Her opponent is also receiving the same donations for the most part.
    3) Why swould she give her a opponent such a huge advantage if what she is doing is not illegal or conflict of interest?

I forgot to add I heard heard her opponent at a non partisan event say (Donnan) she would do everything she can for unions. hmm now the shoe is on the other foot. Funny how Cherie’s opponent is financed by unions
