Rodney Monroe Address Degree Issue At Press Conference

Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Chief Rodney Monroe held a press conference earlier this evening and finally publicly addressed the skirmish that has been bubbling over for the past month over the degree he received from VCU in which university officials have said it was wrongly awarded because Monroe did not meet all of the requirements.  He gave a passionate speech holding back some tears shortly before 5:00 this evening.  I happened to just catch it on the radio as I was on my way to Winthrop for my night class.

The Charlotte Observer has the whole speech here.

According to Monroe, his decision to get a college degree was a personal goal and not career related, therefore he may decide to take steps to correct the issues with the VCU degree.  However, I think the City Council should change the requirement that the police chief needs to have a Bachelor’s Degree anyway.  For what purpose is that a requirement?  I have a Bachelor’s Degree and I am currently studying for my Master’s.  Neither one of these make more qualified than Rodney Monroe who has held the job of Chief of Police in two other cities prior to coming to Charlotte and has a record of success.  A piece of paper will not make Monroe any more qualified for doing the job than he already is.
