Make Pendergraph Charlotte’s “Crime Czar”
Speculation already has begun over who should fill a new county position designed to hold local criminal justice agencies more accountable for improving safety.
Retired Mecklenburg Sheriff Jim Pendergraph said Thursday he is interested in the concept of the job, but needs more information first. His name drew applause one day earlier when County Commissioner Bill James said in a meeting that Pendergraph would be a good fit for the post.
You can’t find a better choice for this position than Jim Pendergraph. He was the Mecklenburg County Sheriff for years and knows the county, the people, the agencies, and the problems. He was on WBT 1100am last night on the Tara Servatius show and said he feels there should be a Web site that shows the names of judges in Mecklenburg County who keep turning repeat offenders loose so they can go back out on the street and commit more crimes. That’s been a huge problem in Charlotte and it’s a brilliant idea by Pendergraph. It’s about time that the public know what these judges they are electing are doing and begin holding them accountable.
