Arrested for Fake Sex
JULY 6–Eight young moviemakers are facing indecent exposure charges for allegedly filming simulated sex acts on a South Carolina beach for a spring break-themed production. Myrtle Beach cops rounded up the group–all of whom attend or have graduated from the North Carolina School of the Arts–after witnesses reported seeing a woman “fellating or simulating fellatio” on a man late Wednesday evening. None of the witnesses, however, reported seeing any nudity, according to a July 2 Myrtle Beach Police Department report. One of those busted told TSG that the group was filming “Beach Week,” a comedy about six college students, and that “there was nothing illegal going on” during filming, which included no nudity. The eight arrestees, seen in the below mug shots, included actress Taylor Hancock, 21, and actor/director Joseph Flanders, 21. Flanders, pictured to the right of Hancock, declined to answer TSG questions about the incident. After spending about 12 hours in custody, crew members were each released on $1000 bond.
You gotta be kidding me. So it’s a crime to pretend to have sex with no nudity involved? Is it a crime if I pretend to be drunk on the beach? What if I drink a Sex on the Beach? That’s pretty suggestive and might be just too hot to handle for Sgt Barney Fife out there at the Myrtle Beach Mayberry Police. Apparently Sgt Richard Beatty (Fife) knew he had nothing of actual substance on these kids because he trumped up some lame charge of “participation in preparation of obscene material.”
A simple exercise of common sense was all that was needed here. All Beatty and the officers had to do was explain to them that passers by on the beach were confused by what they were acting out and that the gestures they were engaging in for their movie could be considered public obscenity and that this probably wasn’t the best place for them to be filming their movie. Ask them to pack up and go, but there was certainly no reason to arrest all of eight of these people and haul them in on some absurd charge.
So to Sgt Richard Beatty, you’re a flatulating butthead. Go get a real job and stop wasting the taxpayers money.
