Perdue Says Raising Taxes is the “Only Option”

Speaking to reporters, Gov. Beverly Perdue called for the legislature to complete its budget negotiations and raise about $1.6 billion in taxes.

Perdue said the plan she submitted this morning, designed to protect health care, public safety and education, was the only option.

“This is the only pathway I know that protects the core services and public education in North Carolina,” she said.

Perdue’s proposal incorporates aspects of both legislative proposals, including taxing alcohol and cigarettes, expanding sales tax to services and an additional income tax bracket.

When asked how North Carolinians could be sure that temporary tax increases would not become permanent, Perdue’s answer was simple.

“Because I’m the governor,” she said.

The N&O

The only option, excepting for cutting out that $25 million pier, or telling Roy Cooper to rein in his wild parties with DC lawyers, etc.

I don’t doubt that the budget will be a mess even with cuts far more draconian that what we’ve seen so far. But I remind all of you that N.C. had plenty of good years, and plenty of time to cut spending, save money, and prepare for the inevitable problems we see today. But the spoiled children from both parties that we keep sending up to Raleigh are addicted to spending like the junkie is addicted to the junk.

You reap what you sow, N.C. Maybe you should think about this the next time some hack politico promises you free crap with someone elses’ tax dollars.

Oh, and “temporary” tax? Again, I refer you to the case of Junkie v. Junk.  North Carolinians are still paying a “temporary” tax passed in 2001. This is like giving a “one-time fix” to a crack addict.
