In our county, many people register as Unaffiliated because the Democrats control the county. They want to be able to vote in the Dem primary for local officials but the GOP for state and national officials. Plus they don't want to be scorned or face hardship at the hands of the Dem controlled officeholders. I have more commentary on this topic on my blog.
