About
Carolina Politics Online is a blog dedicated to discussing political issues throughout both North and South Carolina from a common sense appreciation for freedom and liberty. The site is administrated out of Rock Hill, SC and Charlotte, NC with writers also in the Raleigh triangle. I welcome comments and criticisms of all kinds and all sides of the political spectrum pertaining to the site layout and contents of discussion themselves. Tell us what you think!

I am from MD, not NC, but am a fan of Munger’s and stumbled onto your site when reading articles about him. It seems like a great site.
I noticed that some characters are showing up correctly – mostly in quoted news stories, and thought I would suggest a fix. Look into what it takes to enable UTF8 (Unicode). You may need to set this in both Wordpress and MySQL. It will not retroactively fix old posts, but will take effect for new ones.

AHHC has issued an injunction on NC DMA to prevent them from stopping the fraudulent activities of the PCS agencies. PCS agencies have been billing thousands of tax payer dollars for services to patients that do not need them. Billing for patients that are NOT elderly, frail, disabled patients just so the mom and pop agencies can make a dollar. You need to check into this before AHHC puts a stop to it with their false accusations.

Great site! Glad there’s SOMEONE out there willing to break from the pack of lemmings and call a crook a crook, no matter their political affiliation.

Great website! I enjoy reading your take on things and wish more people here in the Carolinas were aware of what is really going on with our government. When voters become educated of the wasteful spending and outright arrogance of our elected officials, hopefully power will be restored back to “we the people.” Keep it up! Casey-Wilmington, NC

I don’t see any posts related to the controversy surrounding the NC Dept of Public Instruction’s change the U.S. History curriculum which would eliminate the period prior to 1877 from the History Class. That topic has people in my community fired up. There is a FB page just on that topic called “History did not Begin in 1877!” The feedback period ends on Feb 15th. Let’s get the word out!

Lisa:
What you mention is a proposal to change the curriculum, not to eliminate history education for the period before 1877.
That a student has had history classes in prior school years (before high school), that this change will NOT affect, seems to be overlooked by you.
What, really are you up in arms about?

I’m just a citizen of the State of Georgia, excuse me for butting in. But why on God’s green earth do Carolinians keep electing Lindsey Graham to the US Senate?? Not that our professional squishes in Georgia are much different, but now Graham is adding his ‘expertise’ into making Cap n Trade come into being right behind healthcare – then of course amnesty for illegals. Does anyone in South Carolina GET that Graham is neither conservative and only vaguely a republican in the line of Arlen Spector, Olympia Snowe, Susan Collins, or John McCain. If I were a citizen of South Carolina I would begin a recall petition for Graham…seems to me that would be the kindly and neighborly thing to do vis a vis the REST of the US and particularly of the South. How’s about it???? Someone? Anyone????

Don’t blame me, Diane. I voted for Bob Conley in 2008.

Tom Clements for U.S. Senate
Green Party of South Carolina
June 11, 2010
Green Party Fields Senate Candidate to Challenge DeMint & Greene,
only Three candidates to be on November Ballot
As Democrats struggle with their choice of candidate, the best choice for South Carolina
is the truly Green candidate – Tom Clements
Columbia, SC — In what promises to further make the senatorial election an interesting affair, the South Carolina Green Party also has a viable candidate running for the senate seat. The Green Party candidate will be the only third party candidate on the ballot, making the race between a maximum of there candidates.
Tom Clements, noted environmental activist in South Carolina, was affirmed by the Green Party convention in early May to be the senate candidate and all paperwork was properly filed with the State Election Commission. Mr. Clements’ candidacy can be seen listed under third party candidates on the election commission website at:
http://www.scvotes.org/files/2010%20Convention%20Party%20Candidates.pdf
“I intend to run a campaign that will represent the concerns of South Carolina and that will challenge Mr. DeMint for his policies which support his form of big government at the detriment of working folks,” said Tom Clements, a Columbia resident. “While DeMint rails against big government and government spending he endorses policies that impoverish all of us and weaken our country, it’s time for this incumbent to go. I will work to bring a balanced budget to the U.S. while forcefully protecting the environment and curbing military adventurism which has brought our country to its knees. I am the only truly Green candidate in this race and am proud of it.”
Mr. Clements will push for a platform that includes jobs for South Carolinians, universal health care, strong environmental protect and a shift in energy policy to renewables, protection of Social Security and Medicare, large reduction in the national debt and a cut in military spending in order to increase our national security and reduce the debt.
Mr. Clements works for the environmental organization Friends of the Earth on nuclear issues and is considered the public interest watchdog over the Department of Energy’s Savannah River Site. He has a 30-year history working on nuclear and human rights issues. He will work hard to stop South Carolina from becoming the nation’s spent fuel dump and reprocessing site, now being advocated by special interest which stand to profit at our becoming a nuclear dump.
Though he has had extensive policy and lobbying experience, he has never had elected office experience, which he views as an advantage over entrenched incumbents like Mr. DeMint. He recognizes that the concern and anger expressed by such groups as the tea party are legitimate and must be considered. He considers Mr. DeMint to represent the big corporations at the expense of working people and for this alone he should be removed from office.
“I pledge to listen to all views, and unlike Mr. DeMint, will place the interests of working people above those of corporations and big government,” said Mr. Clements. “I welcome all Democrats and Republicans to join me in this effort and am starting to hear from people who are not satisfied with the choices presented by the Democrat and Republican parties.
Mr. Clements served in the Peace Corps in Costa Rica in 1986-88 and for the human rights organization Peace Brigades International in Colombia, South America in 2006-7. He is fluent in Spanish and would welcome the Latino vote.
Unlike some candidates, Mr. Clements has no outstanding charges against him and his only arrest were in participating in civil disobedience aimed at bad nuclear policies, including trespassing in the late 1970s onto the site of the Barnwell spent fuel reprocessing site. That dirty and dangerous facility never opened due to public pressure.
Mr. Clements is a Georgia native who holds a Master in Forest Resources from the University of Georgia and a bachelors form Emory University in Atlanta. He has extensive international experience via meeting with a host of governments in Washington and at the United Nations in New York and Geneva and abroad. He also worked in the 1980s for five years as a carpenter and construction contractor so well knows the struggles of so-called blue collar workers.
A website is soon to go live – clementsforsenate.com – and he has an advisory committee established and a campaign treasurer. The announcement of the campaign was to come later, after the primaries were over, but the debacle with the Democrat candidate for Senate has necessitated communicating before the website is live.
