Clyburn Stumps for Dyer in SC-03

Democratic U.S. House Whip James Clyburn made a stop in Oconee County Thursday afternoon to campaign for fellow Democrat Jane Ballard Dyer.

Democrat Jane Ballard Dyer is challenging Republican incumbent Gresham Barrett for the 3rd District Congressional seat and Republican Nancy Harrelson is challenging Clyburn for the 6th District Congressional seat.

“All over this country people feel very strongly that this country is on the wrong track,” stated Congressman Clyburn. “Over 50 percent of Americans polled are now saying that they want to see one party in the White House and one party running the Congress and they want that one party to be Democrat.”

The Independent Mail

Yeah, great idea, because the last time one party controlled everything it was just swell, you know?

It’s good that Barrett has opposition because every race should be contested, but this is not a race anyone needs to pay much attention to.  Barrett has nothing to worry about.

Clyburn, Harrelson Debate

Jim Clyburn (D-SC-06) debated his Republican challenger Nancy Harrelson yesterday and they delved into one of my favorite issues, the Fair Tax.

They disagreed most pointedly on the Fair Tax, a plan to replace the federal income tax with a national sales tax.

Harrelson, 54, a Republican political newcomer who works as a construction manager in Marion, supports the Fair Tax, which she said would stop jobs from leaving the United States.

“There are only so many people who can work at McDonald’s and Hardee’s, but without other jobs, people won’t be able to afford to eat at McDonald’s and Hardee’s,” she said.

Clyburn, 68, who is seeking his ninth term, said the Fair Tax would result in people paying a 30 percent tax whenever they bought something. He noted that anyone making less than $200,000 a year would be hurt by the change.

“It is anything but fair,” he said. “You’ll be paying an extra dollar for every gallon of gas you buy.”

Of course, in Clyburn’s descent he only tells half the story.  Sure, we would be pay a 30% tax on all new goods and services, but what is he doesn’t tell you is that you will no longer be having any Federal tax witholdings taken from your check, so you’ll be getting almost the entire thing.  Furthermore, all of the taxation that would take place in each phase of manufacturing a product is also wiped away which will cut roughly 25% to 30% of the price we pay for goods and services, so you’ll still be paying close to the same prices as today, but you’ll have considerably more money at your disposal.

The Fair Tax will never become reality however, because the tax code is really what makes the politicians so powerful in D.C.  They wouldn’t be able to use it as a wedge issue any more at election time and gain favor from certain special interests by putting protections in the tax code for them.  This is why we’ll never see it passed.

Clyburn is going to easily win reelection.  This district was carved out to specifically elect a black Congressman so Harrelson is nothing more than a sacrificial lamb in this race for the GOP.  Another good reason to away with gerrymandering.

Clyburn Feels Obama Can Win S.C.

Clyburn said the nation’s financial meltdown and tumbling stock market have improved Obama’s odds here.

“I think it’s still a long shot, but it’s not as long a shot today as it was a month ago,” he said. “People are beginning to see we’ve got to have new leadership.”

The Post and Courier

Obama has as much chance of winning South Carolina as I do of getting laid by the Dallas Cowboy Cheerleaders tonight.  Clyburn is right about one thing, though, and that’s new leadership is sorely needed in this country, but not the Marxist leadership that Obama and Pelosi will offer the nation.

$700 Billion Bailout Passes

The Senate as you are well aware by now passed a sweetened version of the bailout Tuesday evening.  The House voted again today and complied, as I suspected they would.  So the dirty deed is now done.  Bear in mind that this bill was rife with waist added by the Senate on Tuesday night that had nothing to do with the economical turmoil.

  • $2 million tax benefit for makers of wooden arrows for children
  • $100 million tax break to benefit auto racetrack owners
  • $192 million in rebates on excise taxes for the Puerto Rican and Virgin Islands rum industry
  • $148 million in tax relief for U.S. wool fabric producers
  • $49 million tax benefit for fishermen and other plaintiffs who sued over the 1989 tanker Exxon Valdez spill.

People, are you not outraged?  If so, ask yourself why you might be going to the voting booth in November to return the same people to office who just voted for one of the largest Federal power grabs in American history and threw almost a trillion dollars of money we don’t have down the toilet.  Are those of you in South Carolina prepared to give Lindsey Graham another six years?  Think twice.  He’s one of the culprits.  Richard Burr also voted for it on behalf of North Carolina.  Senators Jim DeMint (R-SC) and Elizabeth Dole (R-NC) opposed the measure.  Additionally, both Presidential candidates John McCain and Barack Obama voted for the bailout as did VP candidate Joe Biden.

I can’t get the vote information from the House yet.  The Web site must be getting swamped with traffic because it’s timing out on me, but I’ll post it as soon as I have it available.

Update: I now have the House roll. Sue Myrick and Gresham Barrett flipped on this, voting for the bailout today, whereas they voted against it before.

Voting for the bill:

  • Bob Etheridge (D-NC-02)
  • David Price (D-NC-04)
  • Howard Coble (R-NC-06)
  • Sue Myrick (R-NC-09)
  • Mel Watt (D-NC-12)
  • Brad Miller (D-NC-13)
  • Henry Brown (R-SC-01)
  • Joe Wilson (R-SC-02)
  • Gresham Barrett (R-SC-03)
  • Bob Inglis (R-SC-04)
  • John Spratt (D-SC-05)
  • Jim Clyburn (D-SC-06)

Voting against the bill:

  • G.K. Butterfield (D-NC-01)
  • Walter Jones (R-NC-03)
  • Virginia Foxx (R-NC-05)
  • Mike McIntyre (D-NC-07)
  • Robin Hayes (R-NC-08)

Bailout Fails, How did They Vote?

As I’m sure you have heard by now, the $700 billion bailout failed to pass the House of Representatives today by a mere 13 votes.  I was opposed to this bailout, so I am rather pleased, for now.  They’ll try something again.  I just have a huge issue with this theory that corporations can privatize all of their gains but socialize their losses.  That just doesn’t seem quite right to me.

This video pretty much sums up my thoughts.

So how did your representative vote?  Did they vote to use your tax dollars to bail out Wall Street fat cats or did they vote to save your tax dollars?

Voting for the bailout were:

  • Bob Etheridge (D-NC-02)
  • David Price (D-NC-04)
  • Mel Watt (D-NC-12)
  • Brad Miller (D-NC-13)
  • Henry Brown (R-SC-01)
  • Joe Wilson (R-SC-02)
  • Bob Inglis (R-SC-04)
  • John Spratt (D-SC-05)
  • Jim Clyburn (D-SC-06)

Voting against the heinous bailout were:

  • G.K. Butterfield (D-NC-01)
  • Walter Jones (R-NC-03)
  • Virginia Foxx (R-NC-05)
  • Howard Coble (R-NC-06)
  • Mike McIntyre (D-NC-07)
  • Robin Hayes (R-NC-08)
  • Sue Myrick (R-NC-09)
  • Patrick McHenry (R-NC-10)
  • Heath Shuler (D-NC-11)
  • Gresham Barrett (R-SC-03)

Boy, the South Carolina delegation sure sucks a nut.  David Price is no surprise.  He loves using your money to give special favors to all of his corporate friends.  Same with Henry Brown.  I expected Watt to be on the yea list as well because he is a Socialist.  Overall it looks to be just about split down the middle.  Now you know who is on your side and who is pining for the Rockefellers.

Another $634 Billion Courtesy of Your Representatives

The U.S. Senate today overwhelmingly sent President Bush a spending bill of $634 billion to keep the government “operating beyond the current budget year.”  If only that were the case.  This budget passage, as every other, consisted of a hogfest of a Congressional pen of pigs in starched white shirts feeding from the trough that you and I provided.  This thing is stuffed with thousands of earmarks in addition to $25 billion of taxpayer funded loans to help bailout the automakers.  The bill was presented in its final form from the House to the Senate as H.R. 2638, Department of Homeland Security Appropriations Act, 2008, sponsored by none other than our very own Representative David Price (D-NC-04).

How did our representatives vote?  As usual, in the Senate Jim DeMint stood up and vocally opposed the legislation.  Lindsey Graham joined him in voting against it.  Richard Burr made a rare and unusual move, voting Present, Giving Live Pair.  What this means is that somebody else who not present at the vote and knew they wouldn’t be who planned on voting the opposite way Burr was made a deal with him to vote present so that the outcome wouldn’t be altered by their absence.  In other words, for the sake of argument, let’s say Burr was hypothetically going to vote No, but John McCain was absent and was planning to vote Yes which would cancel out Burr’s vote anyway.  McCain would ask Burr to vote Present then so that the same result is produced.  As I said, this is just a hypothetical.  Burr may have intended to vote Yes and made a deal with an absent Senator who wanted to vote against it.  And we can’t forget Liddy Dole who as usual voted for her pork.

In the House we had the following voting for the waste:

  • G.K. Butterfield (D-NC-01)
  • Bob Etheridge (D-NC-01)
  • David Price (D-NC-04)
  • Howard Coble (R-NC-06)
  • Mike McIntyre (D-NC-07)
  • Robin Hayes (R-NC-08)
  • Sue Myrick (R-NC-09)
  • Patrick McHenry (R-NC-10)
  • Mel Watt (D-NC-12)
  • Brad Miller (D-NC-13)
  • Henry Brown (R-SC-01)
  • Joe Wilson (R-SC-02)
  • John Spratt (D-SC-05)
  • Jim Clyburn (D-SC-06)

Voting against the waste were:

  • Walter Jones (R-NC-03)
  • Virginia Foxx (R-NC-05)
  • Gresham Barrett (R-SC-03)
  • Bob Inglis (R-SC-04)

Heath Shuler did not vote.

Lindsey Graham Sham Passes House

The House passed H.R. 6899 last night, otherwise known as the Comprehensive American Energy Security and Consumer Protection Act.  As I touched on yesterday, this is the House version of Lindsey Graham’s “Gang of 10″ bill that will do absolutely nothing to open up oil reserves off of our shores and lower gas prices.  This bill is nothing more than political cover so that politicians can go into the November election lying to their constituents that they voted for offshore drilling, when they didn’t.  Most of the coastal oil reserves will remain untapped under this bill and will have no effect.  Furthermore, the states will get no royalties from the drilling, so which state is going to okay this and take the slight risk of an oil spill without any revenue from it?  None of them will and Nancy Pelosi knows that.  Let’s not forget the tax increase the oil companies will receive as well which will get passed on to you and me when we’re buying our gas.

So who in the Carolinas voted for this hoax?  Who will lie to you between now and Election Day and claim they voted to lower your prices at the pump?  A lot of them.

Voting aye were:

  • G.K. Butterfield (D-NC-01)
  • Bob Etheridge (D-NC-02)
  • Walter Jones (R-NC-03)
  • David Price (D-NC-04)
  • Mike McIntyre (D-NC-07)
  • Robin Hayes (R-NC-08)
  • Heath Shuler (D-NC-11)
  • Mel Watt (D-NC-12)
  • Brad Miller (D-NC-13)

  • Jim Clyburn (D-SC-06)

Citizens Against Government Waste Release 2007 Ratings

Citizens Against Government Waste is a taxpayer watchdog group that ranks our Congressmen on their effectiveness of responsibly managing our tax dollars and not spending it on frivolous pork barrell spending.  Overall, the current Congress sucks the toejam off a homeless man’s foot in this regard, but our representatives from both North and South Carolina were a little better than most.  A rating of 100% is a taxpayer hero and a rating of 0% is a government elected thief stealing your money in order to pander to his constituents at reelection time.  Our two states received no 100s or zeros, but came close on both ends.

Our four Senators did a pretty good job.  Both Burr and DeMint received an honorable mention by the CAGW, each scoring a 97%.  Graham came in with an 87% and Dole with 73%.  Overall, these scores are acceptable.  The House?  Not so much….

The Republicans did decently for the most part, which surprised me because southern Republicans typically are some of the worst abusers for earmarking in Congress.  The Democrats all performed abysmally and Henry Brown, Robin Hayes, and Walter Jones could use some work themselves.

Clyburn: America needs Obama’s diplomacy

I’m trying to wrap my brain around Clyburn’s statement here:

House Majority Whip Jim Clyburn told delegates in Denver that real national security requires “visionary leadership,” not arsenals of weapons, miles of chain-link fences or shallow tough-talking.

We don’t need an arsenal of weapons.  So what are we supposed to use when threatened by our enemies, throw spitwads at them?  It is that large arsenal of weapons that keeps us from being invaded by the likes of the Russians, the Chinese, and the radical Islamic extremists razing cain across the Middle East and Northern Africa.

We don’t need chain link fences.  I assume he is referring to a border fence.  I don’t necessarily disagree with that.  There are other methods, like fiercely punishing employers who hire illegals, eliminating anchor baby status, and denying social services to illegals, but Obama will never do any of these thing and the border fence ain’t gonna hurt.  It has in fact worked in San Diego.

I don’t know what he’s referring to when he says shallow, tough talking.  Maybe he was dismayed by McCain’s statement on Russia and Georgia.  Maybe he means the Axis of Evil comments by Bush.  Maybe it’s everything.  What I do know is that a President Obama will show great weakness in the face of our nation’s enemies.  I am by no means a neo-con, being very opposed to the view behind the Monroe Doctrine that we are to be the world’s police, but how much more diplomacy are we to be expected to engage in?  We’ve talked and talked and talked with Iran and they are still following through with their nuclear ambitions.  We’ve angrily shaken our finger at Russia and shamed them for their invasion of Georgia and yet they are still occupying parts of the country.  Sometimes force is going to be the only answer.  Sometimes the enemy makes that choice for you.  Obama does not have the strength nor the judgment to know when to make that decision.

Clyburn, Graham Push For Nuclear Power

“We will have a national energy policy,” Clyburn, the House Majority whip and a top-ranking Democrat, said. “It will be wind, it will be solar, it will be biofuel, and, by golly, it will be nuclear.”

Clyburn and Graham, South Carolina’s senior Republican senator, said the state doesn’t have the potential for wind power and solar energy that other states enjoy but that South Carolina is a leader in both nuclear power and nuclear know-how.

The Post and Courier

It’s about damn time the Feds are getting sensible.  Nuclear energy is the cleanest there is and as far as the storage of nuclear waste goes, surely we can take some tips from the French.  They’ve been on it for decades and have obviously dealt with the issue successfully.

Clyburn Will Speak at Democratic Convention

House Majority Whip Jim Clyburn, a Columbia Democrat, is scheduled to speak Aug. 27 at the Democratic National Convention in Denver, a prime Wednesday speaking spot.

Clyburn said Tuesday he hasn’t prepared his speech yet but will keep with the theme of the day, national security.

The State

I’ll be interested to hear Clyburn’s speech on national security.  The Democratic Party post Johnson has generally been seen as weak on national security and foreign affairs.  I think that was amplified by Obama’s retarded remark the other day about the country of Georgia needing to show restraint while they are being invaded by Russia.  And don’t misunderstand, I’m not totally enamoured with everything the Republicans have done either when it comes to national security.  I have serious concerns with certain provisions of the Patriot Act and warrantless wiretapping as well as these boneheaded TSA screenings at the airport.

Clyburn’s Statement on Drilling Just Propaganda

“After nearly eight years of House Republicans rubber-stamping policies of the oil men in the White House that were hand-tailored by and for big oil, Americans are suffering under over $4-a gallon gas. Not only do these Republicans refuse to take responsibility for the failed energy policies of the past, but they are pushing the same old ‘drill only’ plan that will do nothing to bring down gas prices in the near-term. At least they’re recycling.

“The Bush Administration’s own Energy Department has reported that repealing the offshore drilling ban today won’t produce oil or gas until 2017 and would have no impact on prices before 2030.

“The Republican ‘drill only’ plan doesn’t work, and they’ve stood in the way of comprehensive legislation that would increase supply, reduce prices, protect consumers and transition America to a clean, renewable energy-independent future.

The State

Clyburn is full of it.  First of all, gasoline prices have hit the $3 and $4 mark under the Democrats’ reign of Congress in the past year and a half.  They have done nothing about it.  The Republicans have tried to get legislation passed to open up more oil rich areas in our own nation for drilling and the Pelosi Congress won’t even allow a vote on it.  This entire week several Republicans have remained in the Congressional chambers while the Congress is out of session demanding that Pelosi reconvene and hold a vote on legislation to open up offshore drilling.  There are enough Democrats supporting this that it will pass and both Nancy Pelosi and Harry Reid know it.  That is why they won’t allow the vote.  They have sold out to extremist environmentalist groups and Pelosi thinks it’s her duty to prevent any larger supply of oil from being used so that she can “save the planet.” Those are her own words.

Clyburn’s accusation that the Republicans have stood in the way of a clean, renewable future is a lie.  Billions of dollars have been invested in alternative energies for a few decades by the Federal government and it’s gotten us very little in return.  The technology isn’t here yet and it’ll be several years before it is.  We need to use the resources we have now while at the same time continuing alternative research.

Clyburn has apparently joined hands with the far left in embracing the fact that you are paying $4 a gallon for gasoline.

Clyburn Using Alleged Global Warming to Push Marxism

What a piece of work this guy is.

Climate change is no longer just an environmental issue. It’s now an issue of race, according to global warming activists and policy makers.

“It is critical our community be an integral and active part of the debate because African-Americans are disproportionately impacted by the effects of climate change economically, socially and through our health and well-being,” House Majority Whip James Clyburn, D-S.C., said July 29.

Clyburn spoke at the National Press Club in Washington, D.C., to help launch the Commission to Engage African-Americans on Climate Change, a project of the Joint Center for Political and Economic Studies.

Business Media Institute

What a great way to unify the country and promote cultural harmony.  Tax one group and give it to another all based on the color of their skin.  His statements don’t catch me by surprise.  This is what the global warming hoax is really all about, Marxism.  The U.N., the Europeans, the left, all of this bologna about climate change is to make reality the concept of global wealth redistribution.  Don’t believe me?  Read below:

The report suggested implementing a “fee, tax or allowance auction on polluters,” which was meant to “eliminate the financial burden on low-income and moderate-income households. This would pay for efforts to reduce global warming. Hoerner said that although it would cause product costs to increase, under his policy, the revenue from the “fee, tax, or allowance auction payment” would be redistributed to consumers to offset the higher costs.

See?  Create a tax to solve a problem that doesn’t exist and use it to redistribute the money from one group of people to another group that has allegedly been “desparaged” mainly through no fault other than their own.  This is the true motivation behind the global warming religion.  Clyburn is so full of shit, but no doubt his rhetoric will play well with the “bruthas” back home.

Lexington Councilman Calls Wilson “Wussy” Over Earmarks

Wilson, a former state senator who earlier worked for Spence and U.S. Sen. Strom Thurmond, draws enthusiastic crowds as he tours the summertime festivals up and down his district.

But the congressman’s new pledge not to seek funding earmarks in Washington has angered local leaders back home, among them some fellow Republicans.

“We’re in dire need of federal funding for roads,” Lexington City Councilman Danny Frazier said Friday. “That’s why I’m concerned about Joe not taking earmarks. If everyone else is getting earmarks, we should get them, too.”

Frazier — who went so far as to call Wilson “a wussy” at a recent televised council meeting — noted House Majority Whip Jim Clyburn, D-Richland, has brought home tens of millions of dollars for his constituents in the neighboring 6th District.

The State

Yes, Clyburn does bring home millions to the district, but that doesn’t make it right, Councilman.  That money that Clyburn brings back isn’t his money nor his district’s money and it gets spent on things that a lot of people don’t benefit from anyhow.  The best use of pork dollars is to let the taxpayers keep what they earned to begin with and let them determine how to spend their own money.  Wilson deserves some credit from you and other supposed Republicans for standing up for fiscal solvency.

In the Lowcountry, Beaufort County Council chairman Weston Newman and deputy chairman William “Skeet” Von Harten went to Washington in March to ask Wilson to help obtain money to help expand the Beaufort National Cemetery for veterans.

The two men were disappointed when Wilson, a longtime National Guard officer with four sons who have served in the military, turned them down. Von Harten recounted his response to Wilson.

“Goodness gracious, we know that there are going to be earmarks. We know that others are going to do it. We would hope that maybe we could pick up some support from you,” Von Harten told Wilson.

The attitudes exhibited by Frazier and Mr. Von Harten are precisely why earmarks continue and corruption strolls right along side them.  The “everyone else is going to do it anyway” view is what is stopping many members of Congress to eliminate them altogether.  A stand needs to begin somewhere and Wilson apparently realizes that.  Hopefully, Wilson will not return to the trough after his pledged one year moratorium.

Clyburn Caught With Hand in Cookie Jar

This year’s budget includes at least four earmarks that could benefit people close to Clyburn.

The veteran lawmaker helped secure $784,000 for the planning and design of the International African-American Museum in Charleston. Clyburn’s nephew, Derrick Ballard, is one of the lead architects on that project.

Similarly, in 2005, Clyburn earmarked $145,500 for a community center to be designed by Ballard.

He also set aside $229,000 in this year’s budget to the Charles R. Drew Wellness Center in Columbia — a facility he helped construct with a 2003 earmark of $990,000. His daughter, Angela, is the marketing and membership director there.

He got $282,000 appropriated for The South Sumter Resource Center, where his sister-in- law, Gwendolyn, is housing coordinator for the center’s community development division. He’s secured $670,000 for the resource center in past budgets.

The Post and Courier

Along with the cost of earmarks, this is the other main reason why they need to be eliminated.  What you have here is pure, unadulterated corruption.  James Clyburn is using his power in the Federal Government to steer our tax dollars into the pockets of his family.  The man should be removed from Congress for this immediately, but that’s about as likely as Bush getting impeached.  So, that leaves it up to his constituents to decide in November and they’ll most certainly keep him.  Clyburn’s district has been drawn especially for him and partisans love a corrupt politician as long as he is of the same stripe.

Clyburn Hires Former Councilman Convicted of Bribery and Extortion

James Clyburn, 6th District congressman and House majority whip, said Wednesday his office has hired the former Orangeburg County Council chairman to serve as a field representative and liaison between the office and district constituents.

Rickenbacker, who was released from a Columbia-based halfway house April 7 after serving a one-year sentence in a federal prison system for federal bribery and extortion charges, will begin working in his new position as early as today, depending on completion of the required applications.

The Times and Democrat

This man was put in jail for accepting a $50,000 bribe not even two years ago and Clyburn hires him to work in one of his field offices?  Who is advising this man?  The public already has a very dismal view of Washington.  I guess he’ll fit in with every other crook that helps make up the Federal Government.

Clyburn Speaks of Second “Stimulus” Plan

COLUMBIA — U.S. Rep. James Clyburn said Friday it is time for Congress to roll out a second economic stimulus package one aimed at putting Americans back to work and defraying the skyrocketing cost of living for average families. The Democratic-led U.S. House is expected to unveil a new proposal in about two weeks, said Clyburn, D-Columbia.

He hopes the plan will include $1 billion to fund a summer work program in cities and communities across the country, creating 1 million new jobs and an instant infusion to the stalling U.S. economy.

The Herald

This is not a stimulus plan and will not create any economic activity.  This is simply government interference in the market.  The plan that Clyburn speaks of is nothing more than wealth redistribution, taking tax dollars from one group of people and handing it to another.  This does not stimulate the economy or create wealth; it’s just an attempted continuation of Roosevelt’s Raw Deal.

The private sector creates wealth.  The public sector consumes it.

All SC Congressional Seats to be Contested

While all six of the state’s congressmen face challengers, none of the races will be repeats as the all the major party losers in the general election of 2006 did not file to run for Congress again.

Fifth District Congressman John Spratt went the longest without a challenger. Republican Albert F. Spencer didn’t file to run against the 13-term Democrat until Saturday.

Spencer and Spratt have met before. In 2004, Spencer got 37 percent of the vote. A much better financed and supported Republican challenger in 2006, Ralph Norman, received about 43 percent of the vote against Spratt.

The 5th District stretches along the state’s northern border and rural Pee Dee areas - from Newberry and Cherokee counties more than 130 miles east to Dillon County.

The most crowded race is in the 1st District, which stretches from the Grand Strand to Charleston. Four-term incumbent Henry Brown will face Katherine Jenerette and Paul V. Norris in the Republican primary, while Linda Ketner and Ben Frasier compete for the Democratic nomination.

In the 2nd District, incumbent Joe Wilson will go for his fourth full term. He faces Phil Black in the Republican primary, while Rob Miller and Blaine Lotz are running for the Democratic nomination. That district runs from Beaufort County north into the northern and western suburbs of Columbia.

Gresham Barrett is seeking a fourth term in the 3rd District in the northwest part of the state. He will face Democrat Jane Dyer in the general election.

Fourth District incumbent Bob Inglis is trying for a third term since returning to Congress in 2004. He will face Charles Jeter in the Republican primary, while Bryan McCanless, Paul H. Corden and Ted Christian face off in the Democratic primary.

House Majority Whip Jim Clyburn will run for a ninth term in the majority-black 6th District. He will take on Republican Nancy Harrelson in the general election.

The State

Because of gerrymandering, don’t expect any of these to flip.

Dems May Have Chance in South Carolina

Congressman James Clyburn said Sunday the record turnout in the state’s Democratic presidential primary means the Democratic nominee has a chance of winning the traditionally Republican state in November.

“If we continue to run a really good, futuristic campaign, South Carolina and other Southern states will be in play, come November,” said Clyburn, who as House Majority Whip, is the highest-ranking African-American in the U.S. Congress.

South Carolina has gone to a Republican candidate for president for seven consecutive election cycles. The last Democrat to win South Carolina was Jimmy Carter in 1976.

Clyburn is encouraged by this: More than 532,000 people voted in the Democratic primary, setting an all-time record and besting 2004’s primary total by 240,000 votes.

The Democratic total also bested Republican turnout from a week earlier by 87,000 votes.

The State

It’s certainly possible, but only if Barack Obama is the Democratic nominee.  If it’s Hillary the Democrats can forget about winning any southern state.  It simply depends on the candidate match up after the nominating conventions.

Jafza Hub to Bring Thousands of Jobs to SC

U.S. Rep. Jim Clyburn, D-S.C., says “support is overwhelming” from most Orangeburg County residents for a Dubai company’s plans to build a logistics hub there.

Clyburn said he has received letters from a few residents opposing the project because of concerns about increased truck traffic.

But “most people think about the future,” said Clyburn, who, as majority whip, is the Democrats’ chief vote-gatherer in the House and its third-ranking member.

Jafza International of Dubai announced plans in September to build a complex of warehouses on a 1,324-acre site on Interstate 95 near Santee that is expected to employ 5,500 people and draw investments worth $600 million by 2015.

The State

Put down another win for South Carolina.  This is great news!
